Functional Study of an Archaeological Tool of Mammoth Ivory with Four Spiral Holes

In an archaeological experiment, the hypothesis was tested whether replica of a perforated bâton percé with four spiral holes made from mammoth ivory, which excavated in 2015 at Hohle Fels Cave Schelklingen, is suitable for making ropes. For this purpose, author has experimentally carved object tools based on corresponding devices Upper Paleolithic. Leather cords were used to make rope, fed through as bundle fibers. The strands twisted individually and finally into four-strand rope. At least six participants are required successfully conduct experiment. As result, it shown that rope production possible using percé.
